Retired Maj Gen Rabe Abubakar and his wife were abducted from their car on Saturday while travelling through Katsina state in north-west Nigeria. The former army spokesman, who held the post between 2015 and 2017, was on his way to attend a wedding when gunmen attacked the vehicle. The driver escaped after being struck by gunfire, according to local reports.

The attackers took the retired general and his wife into a nearby forested area. No group has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping. Military spokesman Gen Michael Onoja told BBC News that efforts are under way to rescue the couple and track down their captors.

The army is still waiting for the kidnappers to contact the family. The abduction occurred days after armed men raided Kiliya village in Dutsinma Local Government Area on Friday, killing at least 16 people. Residents said the attack took place shortly after Friday prayers as villagers gathered to celebrate the Eid al-Adha holiday.

Security agencies had issued warnings about possible attacks during the Eid al-Adha celebrations. Some state governments responded by limiting large public gatherings and strengthening security measures. Police have not yet commented on the reported killings in Kiliya village.

Katsina remains one of the states most affected by violence carried out by criminal gangs known locally as bandits, who frequently conduct kidnappings for ransom, cattle rustling and attacks on rural communities. Some militant jihadists have also operated in the region.
