Retro Games Auction in Surrey Totals £200,000
Ewbank’s Auctioneers in Surrey sold an empty Super Mario 64 box signed by Shigeru Miyamoto for £8,450. Pokémon trading cards and sealed games also fetched high prices in the sale that reached £200,000 overall. nypost.com reported the results from last week.

An auction of retro video games and memorabilia by Ewbank’s Auctioneers in Surrey last week reached a total of £200,000. An empty box that originally held the 1996 Nintendo 64 game Super Mario 64, signed by Shigeru Miyamoto, sold for £8,450. The box had been signed at the Virgin Megastore on Oxford Street in London on February 21, 2003, during Miyamoto’s first and only public appearance in Europe.
A collection of five Pokémon trading cards inspired by Edvard Munch’s painting The Scream sold for £12,350. A first-print factory-sealed copy of the 2005 Game Boy Advance game Pokémon Emerald sold for £4,940, while a sealed copy of the 2000 Game Boy game Pokémon Yellow sold for £3,640. The top ten trading card lots in the sale combined for £43,940.
A copy of the 1963 comic The Amazing Spider-Man No. 1 sold for £4,160. A rare Japan-exclusive Panasonic Q console sold for £1,235. Ewbank’s specialist James Spooner said Pokémon cards hold the strongest appeal among gaming collectibles due to their global following.
Spooner added that most lots exceeded estimates and that demand for retro video games showed the clearest price increases. Auctioneer Andrew Ewbank said Sony’s decision earlier this month to end production of physical game discs for PlayStation consoles has driven fans toward historic physical copies as collectibles.
The auction house stated that Sony’s move likely contributed to the stronger results for retro items.
