Rivian Begins R2 SUV Deliveries and Cuts Under 2 Percent of Workforce
Rivian confirmed the cuts affect less than 2 percent of its workforce and target service, sales and marketing teams. The company said the move is part of a restructuring to reach profitability.
TechCrunchRivian began laying off hundreds of workers one week after it started deliveries of its R2 SUV. The company confirmed the cuts to TechCrunch on June 16, 2026. The Wall Street Journal first reported the reductions on Tuesday.
Rivian said the layoffs affect less than 2 percent of its overall workforce and impact service and customer teams, including sales and marketing. “We recently restructured a handful of teams within Rivian as we work to profitably scale our business,” the company said in a statement. This round marks at least the fourth set of cuts Rivian has made since the beginning of 2024.
The company had aimed to reach its first profit in 2027 after accumulating losses of around $30 billion. Rivian pushed that profitability target back in March 2026 because of spending on autonomous vehicle technology. 25 billion in Rivian and purchase as many as 50,000 R2 SUVs for use as robotaxis.
Rivian currently offers only a hands-off, eyes-on-the-road driver assistance feature and has not yet demonstrated full autonomous vehicle capabilities.
