Riz Ahmed Hosts 'Saturday Night Live U.K.' and Addresses British Identity in Monologue

Riz Ahmed hosted the April 4 episode of 'Saturday Night Live U.K.,' the British adaptation of the U.S. comedy series. During his opening monologue, Ahmed spoke about his professional background and British cultural elements.

Ahmed described himself as an actor, writer, producer, and rapper. He referenced his Oscar-nominated role in the film 'Sound of Metal' and his part as a terrorist in the comedy 'Four Lions.' He also mentioned his latest role in the TV comedy 'Bait,' which centers on an out-of-work actor auditioning for James Bond and experiencing an identity crisis.

Ahmed explained that the character's identity issues reflected his own experiences, noting he grew up in Wembley and attended Oxford University. This background, he said, contributed to his accent, which he described as a mix between rapper Stormzy and former British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

Ahmed addressed broader British identity, stating that the nation appeared divided over politics, climate issues, and figures like the Beckhams. He suggested that a shared trait among Britons was an appreciation for situations that are imperfect.

“We like it when things are a little bit crap.”

He provided examples, including understated compliments, sports like cricket that can last five days without a decisive result, and modest gifts. Ahmed also noted that Britons celebrate minor mishaps, such as cheering when someone drops a pint glass in a pub.

'Saturday Night Live U.K.' launched its first season on March 21, hosted by Tina Fey with musical guest Wet Leg. The series is scheduled for eight episodes total. The next episode on April 11 will feature host Jack Whitehall and musical guest R&B artist Jorja Smith.

Following that, the show will pause for one week and resume on April 25 with additional episodes. Ahmed has previously expressed interest in standup comedy, though associates have discouraged him from pursuing it, as reported in a recent Guardian interview.

The program adapts the long-running U.S. format, which originated in 1975, to a British context, incorporating local humor and performers. This season marks the debut of the U.K. version, produced for a British audience while drawing on the original's sketch comedy style.
