NEWARK, N.J. — U.S. Attorney Robert Frazer announced on June 1, 2026 that Joyce M. Malliet has been appointed First Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey.

Malliet will serve as the office’s second-ranking official. She will assist Frazer in directing all operations and carrying out the office’s mission throughout the District of New Jersey, which encompasses the state’s 21 counties and more than 9.2 million residents.

The appointment changes the office’s internal command structure immediately. Prior to the move the position of First Assistant was either vacant or held by an acting official; Malliet now assumes permanent day-to-day oversight of the office’s criminal, civil, and appellate divisions.

Downstream effects include faster decision-making on charging, plea negotiations, and civil settlements across active dockets. The First Assistant also chairs the office’s senior management team, which sets enforcement priorities, allocates prosecutorial resources, and coordinates with the Justice Department’s main components in Washington.

Malliet’s installation triggers immediate internal reporting adjustments and requires her sign-off on all sensitive matters that previously routed directly to the U.S. Attorney or an acting deputy.

The District of New Jersey handles one of the busiest federal dockets in the country, with significant caseloads in pharmaceutical fraud, public corruption, securities violations, and terrorism-related prosecutions. The First Assistant plays a central role in those files and in liaison with the FBI, DEA, IRS-CI, and state law-enforcement partners.

This is the first senior leadership appointment announced by Frazer since he took office. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey has operated without a Senate-confirmed U.S. Attorney for portions of the prior administration, relying on interim leadership and acting first assistants during that period.
