Romania signed an initial agreement to acquire six Spyder systems from Israel's Rafael. The deal forms the first phase of a framework valued at more than €2 billion and includes local production plans.
Breaking DefenseRomania will acquire six integrated Spyder air defense systems from Rafael under an agreement signed Wednesday through CN Romtehnica SA, a company under the Romanian Ministry of National Defense. The contract covers launchers, interceptors, radar systems, training arrays and logistical support.
It marks the first phase of a strategic framework between Rafael and Bucharest estimated at more than €2 billion.
The systems will protect against short- to medium-range threats including drones and cruise missiles. Spyder is a mobile platform that employs Rafael’s Python and Derby missiles. Rafael said the acquisition will position Spyder as a European standard and reinforce Romania’s alignment with NATO air defense requirements.
The agreement also calls for extensive industrial cooperation and local production in Romania. “Rafael is honored to sign the largest deal in the company’s history and to provide another NATO nation with an advanced air defense system,” said Yoav Tourgeman, Rafael’s CEO. He added that Romania’s selection reflects growing European confidence in the company’s proven systems.
Rafael described the pact as evidence of technological alignment and expanded defense cooperation between Romania and Israel.
