nypost.comRonda Rousey defeated Gina Carano by armbar submission 17 seconds into their featherweight bout on May 16 at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California. The fight headlined a card streamed on Netflix. Rousey, 39, had not competed since December 2016. Carano, 44, had not fought since August 2009.
Rousey took Carano down immediately and applied her signature armbar. Carano tapped out, ending the contest. Rousey improved to 13-2-0 in mixed martial arts. The win marked her tenth submission victory.
“Gina is the only person who could have brought me back into MMA – she’s my hero. She changed my world, and we changed the world, and I’ll never ever forget that or be able to pay that back enough. I’m so glad we finally got to share this moment.”
Rousey said she has no plans to fight again and wants to have more children. Carano expressed disappointment that the bout ended so quickly.
“I wanted that to last longer – I felt like I was so ready, I felt so good. But I haven’t been here for 17 years. I wanted to hit her.”
Carano said getting into the cage after 17 years and fighting a legend counted as victories for her. She revealed she had lost more than 100 pounds in the two years leading up to the fight.
Both women helped popularize women’s mixed martial arts more than a decade ago. Carano later appeared in action films including Haywire and was fired from The Mandalorian in 2021. The fighters were offered a large payday to return. Reports indicate each received several million dollars from Netflix for the one-off bout.
