Roof Collapse at Lahore Tutoring Center Kills at Least 14 Children, Injures Eight

A roof collapse at a tutoring center under construction in Lahore, Pakistan, killed at least 14 schoolchildren on Tuesday. Eight other children were injured and are being treated at a hospital, senior police official Faisal Kamran said. The owner of the tutoring center and another person have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Rescuers searched through the rubble after reports that more children could be trapped. Kamran said the tutoring center was housed in an aging building and that the roof of an unfinished second floor collapsed because of poor construction quality. Pakistan's President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed grief over the collapse.

In separate statements, they offered condolences to the victims' families and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured. Lahore is the capital of Pakistan's Punjab province.
