The 81-year-old former New York City mayor fell into the coma but is now conscious, off the ventilator, and cracking jokes, according to his son Andrew Giuliani.
The pneumonia was exacerbated by a respiratory illness Giuliani contracted during the September 11, 2001 terror attacks.

Friends of Giuliani had earlier revealed his emergence from the coma on Monday. Giuliani appeared to cough during his podcast on Friday, May 1, 2026, before his hospitalization, the New York Post reported. Von Essen, who has been briefed on Giuliani's condition, expressed worry but highlighted Giuliani's compassion for 9/11 families and his contributions to New York City.
He described Giuliani's actions during that time as remarkable and hoped for a great recovery.
