Ruling Parties to Speed Up Hokuriku Shinkansen Extension Route Decision

Japan TimesJapan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party and Japan Innovation Party are set to speed up talks on selecting a route for the planned extension of the Hokuriku Shinkansen bullet train line. The parties hope to pick one of the eight proposed routes under review within the current parliamentary session, Japan Times reported.
They also aim to start construction in fiscal 2027, which begins in April 2027.
The Hokuriku Shinkansen line is scheduled to be extended from Tsuruga Station in Fukui Prefecture to Shin-Osaka Station. The ruling coalition hopes to finalize the bullet train line's route by the end of the parliamentary session and start construction in fiscal 2027.
In a statement outlining the accelerated timeline, the parties indicated that advancing the decision now would allow work to begin on schedule. The move comes as the extension project has lingered in planning amid multiple route options.
