Runner gored in face during Pamplona bull run

One runner was gored in the face and 12 others received medical treatment during a bull run at Spain's San Fermin festival on Saturday. The six bulls and steers charged through crowds packed along the narrow street course in Pamplona. The animals knocked runners to the cobblestones and several pileups occurred during the two-and-a-half-minute run from the pen to the bull ring.

A black bull broke away from the pack early in the 875-meter course and struck one person in the face with its horn. Officials said it was unclear whether that contact caused the reported goring.

Festival background Saturday marked the fifth morning run of the eight-day festival in northern Spain. The event marks 100 years since the publication of Ernest Hemingway's novel "The Sun Also Rises," which helped bring the festival international attention.

The last death at the bull runs occurred in 2009. Gorings and broken bones remain common, partly due to the large number of novice runners and foreign tourists who participate.
