Jenny Simpson was taken to a hospital after collapsing at a track event in Raleigh, North Carolina, on Tuesday. The organizer of the event said a medical incident occurred while she paced a mile group. Runner’s World and LetsRun reported that Simpson lost her pulse for a period before it was restored with CPR and an AED.
The organizer said staff responded immediately and that Simpson is receiving medical care. The statement thanked emergency medical services and medical professionals for their response. The organizer also thanked people who contacted the event with support and asked that Simpson and her family remain in thoughts and prayers.
She won a bronze medal in the 1500m at the 2016 Olympics and earned a world championship title in the event in 2011. She later won silver medals at the 2013 and 2017 world championships and claimed 11 U.S. titles before retiring from competitive running in 2024.
