Russian Defence Minister Andrey Belousov held talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Pyongyang on April 26, 2026, advancing plans for deepened military cooperation between the two nations. Belousov described relations between Russia and North Korea as at an unprecedentedly high level during the discussions, according to Russian state news agency Tass.
Preparations were under way for a five-year military cooperation plan, with an agreement reached with the DPRK’s defence ministry to place military cooperation on a sustainable long-term footing.
Russia is prepared to sign a Russian-Korean military cooperation plan for the 2027-2031 period this year, Belousov stated via Tass. The defence cooperation plan between North Korea and Russia is a five-year plan. Kim Jong-un and Belousov discussed a series of issues to further consolidate and level up strengthening and developing political and military cooperation and collaboration between Pyongyang and Moscow, according to the Korean Central News Agency.
Separately, Kim Jong-un greeted Russian State Duma Chairman Vyacheslav Volodin at the inaugural ceremony of a memorial museum dedicated to North Korean soldiers killed in the Ukraine conflict.
