Russian forces carried out a combined drone and missile attack on Kyiv on Sunday that killed at least two people and wounded 83 others, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said. The Oreshnik ballistic missile, which Russia states can carry nuclear or conventional warheads, struck the city of Bila Tserkva in the Kyiv region.

Ukrainian air defenses intercepted 549 of 600 drones and 55 of 90 missiles launched in the assault, according to Ukraine's Air Force.

Buildings were damaged in 50 locations across several districts of the capital, including residential structures, schools, markets, and police facilities, Ukraine's emergency service stated. Fires continued into the morning, and rescue operations remained active at multiple sites.

Kyiv resident Svitlana Onofryichuk, 55, said the market where she had worked for 22 years was destroyed. "It was a terrible night, and there had never been anything like it in the entire war," she said. Another resident, Yevhen Zosin, 74, reported that an explosion threw him and his dog backward and destroyed his apartment.

Defense Ministry confirmed it used the Oreshnik and other missiles against what it described as Ukrainian military command facilities, air bases, and military industrial enterprises. The ministry stated the attack was retaliation for Ukrainian strikes on civilian facilities inside Russia.

In a later statement, the ministry said no civilian sites were targeted. Ukrainian Ambassador Andrii Melnyk told the U.N. Security Council that Ukraine's May 22 operations targeted only military assets.

Russia first used the Oreshnik in Dnipro in November 2024 and again in the Lviv region in January. President Vladimir Putin has stated the missile travels at Mach 10 and can strike underground targets. The attack occurred after Putin ordered retaliation proposals following a May 22 drone strike on a college dormitory in Russian-occupied Starobilsk that killed 21 people, according to Russia's Ministry of Emergency Situations.
