Russia and Ukraine Trade Overnight Strikes, Killing One in Russia and Injuring Nine in Ukraine

Russia and Ukraine traded strikes overnight into Saturday morning, injuring nine people in southeastern Ukraine and killing one person in southern Russia. Oleksandr Hanzha, head of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional State Administration, said Russia targeted three districts in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast with more than 20 strikes using drones and aerial bombs.

One 40-year-old man injured in the attack was taken to hospital in critical condition.

Veniamin Kondratyev, governor of Russia's Krasnodar Krai region, reported that a Ukrainian drone attack on the Temryuk district killed one person and wounded three others. Falling debris from the drones caused a fire at a sea terminal in the area, and 96 firefighters responded to the blaze.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Wednesday that 11 regions of Ukraine had come under Russian attack since the start of the week.

He wrote on X that Russia used nearly 530 drones and two air-launched guided missiles against Ukraine, injuring dozens of people. Ukraine's air force said its air defences intercepted 110 Russian Shahed attack drones on Friday night. Earlier this week, Ukrainian forces struck the Kuibyshev oil refinery in Russia's Samara region and two oil infrastructure facilities in the Vladimir region.

Ukrainian FP-5 Flamingo cruise missiles also hit a military plant in Russia's Cheboksary that supplies drones and missiles to Russian forces, Zelenskyy said. On Friday, EU member states agreed to open the first cluster of membership negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the first Intergovernmental Conference on Monday will open the cluster on fundamentals for both countries' EU accession.
