A Russian missile struck a nine-story apartment building in Kyiv’s Darnytsia district overnight, splitting the structure in two and destroying all 18 apartments, according to multiple reports. Four people were killed across the strikes on the capital and 33 others were wounded, Ukrainian authorities said.
A 12-year-old girl was among the dead. City officials reported one person killed and at least 31 wounded in Kyiv from the mass attack. At least 10 people remained missing at the Darnytsia site.
Rescue workers pulled dead from the rubble of the partly collapsed building throughout the morning. Emergency crews rescued 28 residents from the structure, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said. The strike damaged residential buildings and civilian infrastructure across six of Kyiv’s districts. Windows in neighboring blocks were shattered by the blast wave.
The overnight barrage was part of a large-scale Russian drone and missile attack that began before dawn on Thursday, May 14, 2026. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia launched more than 670 drones and 56 missiles in the attack, using both ballistic and cruise missiles.
He added that Moscow had launched more than 1,560 drones against Ukrainian population centers since the start of Wednesday, May 13.
Fighting continued over the 72-hour period, although at reportedly reduced intensity. Other cities across Ukraine reported damage and casualties from the overnight barrage. The strikes occurred as U.S. President Donald Trump met with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing.
