Russian Drone Strikes Apartment Building in NATO Member Romania

A Russian drone launched against Ukraine struck an apartment building in Galati, Romania, early Friday, injuring two residents. The incident occurred in a NATO member state near the Ukrainian border. Romanian officials called an emergency national security council meeting to review the event. The government also summoned the Russian ambassador for discussions.

Commission president Ursula von der Leyen stated that the incursion struck a populated area on EU territory and said the bloc would prepare a 21st package of sanctions. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas described the crash as a violation of Romanian sovereignty and said foreign ministers had agreed to increase pressure on Russia.
