Ukraine Strikes Russian Nuclear Fuel Site Near Chernobyl; Russia Launches Retaliatory Drones as European Leaders Meet in London
A Russian drone attack killed three civilians at a bus stop in southeastern Ukraine and damaged a spent nuclear fuel storage facility near Chernobyl. European leaders met in London to discuss continued support for Ukraine amid ongoing long-range strikes by both sides.
winnipegfreepress.comA Ukrainian drone struck a storage facility for spent nuclear fuel in Ukraine’s Kyiv region on Sunday, about 15 kilometers from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, according to Ukraine’s General Staff. The strike caused a fire that was extinguished within an hour and radiation levels remained within safe limits, officials said.
International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Grossi described the incident as “deeply concerning” due to the large amounts of nuclear material at the site and said the agency would visit soon.
Separately, Russian drone strikes killed three people waiting at a bus stop in Balabyne in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region and wounded one other, according to the head of the regional military administration. The strikes occurred as UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, French President Emmanuel Macron and German opposition leader Friedrich Merz in London to discuss continued support for Ukraine.
The meeting followed a large-scale Ukrainian drone attack on Saint Petersburg, Russia’s second-largest city, less than 24 hours after the end of the city’s economic forum.
The E3 group of Britain, France and Germany has been among the most active European backers of Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. A Ukrainian attack also killed one man and injured a woman in Russia’s Kursk region, local officials said. The four-year war shows no sign of ending as both sides continue long-range strikes while the front line remains largely static.
