A Russian drone struck an apartment building in the Romanian city of Galati during an overnight attack on Ukraine, injuring two civilians and starting a fire. The incident occurred in a community along the Danube River near the borders with Moldova and Ukraine. Two people suffered minor injuries and others were evacuated from the building.

NATO response NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said the alliance is ready to defend every inch of allied territory. He stated that NATO will continue to enhance readiness to deter and defend against any threat, including from drones. Rutte blamed Russia for the incursion, describing the country's behavior as reckless and a danger to all.

He noted that Russia continues to target civilians and civilian infrastructure across Ukraine.

Romanian measures Romanian officials called a meeting of the Supreme Council of National Defence to discuss the incident, which they described as the most serious event affecting national territory since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in 2022. Officials said they will order proportionate measures in relation to the Russian Federation.

U.S. statement The U.S.

Ambassador to NATO condemned the incursion on Romanian territory. The ambassador said Washington stands with its Romanian ally and will defend every inch of NATO territory. The incident follows roughly half a dozen real or suspected drone incidents across the Baltic region and Finland in recent weeks.
