A Russian drone struck a residential building in the Romanian city of Galati overnight on May 29, injuring at least two people and starting a fire, local authorities said. The incident followed a large-scale Russian drone attack on Ukraine's southern Odesa region, which borders Romania.

Ukrainian officials reported that the drone crossed into Romanian territory after targeting civilian infrastructure near the border city of Reni.

" He described the strike as part of a deliberate attack on civilian targets and called for the European Union to impose stronger sanctions on Russia. "We count on the European Union's new sanctions measures against Russia to be truly strong and to make Russia feel that its strikes mean significant losses for Russia itself," Zelenskyy said.

He added that bolstering Ukraine's air defenses would also help protect neighboring countries from similar incidents.

Russia launched 232 drones against Ukraine during the night of May 28-29. Ukrainian air defense forces intercepted 217 of them, according to Ukrainian military statements. The straight-line distance from Reni in Ukraine to Galati is about 20 kilometers. The drone that reached Romania was described as a Shahed-type unmanned aerial vehicle.

Sybiha said Russia poses a real threat to the Black Sea region and all of Europe. He stated that strengthening support for Ukraine and increasing pressure on Russia remain critical steps. "Strengthening support to Ukraine and increasing pressure on the aggressor, including through tougher sanctions, remain critical," Sybiha said.

Officials in both countries indicated they would work together to improve protection against future cross-border incidents.
