Russian Missiles and Drones Strike Kyiv, Killing at Least 11

Russian missiles and drones struck Kyiv early Monday, killing at least 11 people and heavily damaging apartment blocks, officials said. The attack occurred just days after the deadliest assault on the Ukrainian capital this year. Rescue crews pulled residents from damaged buildings as the death toll in the capital rose to 11, with 46 people wounded across the city.

At least 15 residential buildings were damaged or destroyed, including a nine-storey block in the Podilskyi district that was largely destroyed from the fifth level up.

Ukraine's air force said Russia used 68 missiles, including 23 ballistic and six super and hypersonic missiles, along with 351 drones. Air defense units shot down or neutralized 37 missiles and 326 drones, but none of the ballistic or super and hypersonic missiles were intercepted.

The Russian defense ministry stated it conducted a massive attack using long-range weapons and drones, targeting military and energy facilities in Kyiv and the surrounding region, as well as military airfields in other Ukrainian regions. Witnesses reported explosions in the capital and air defense activity.

Another person was killed and 15 injured in the Kyiv region, while at least one person was injured in an attack on the southern port of Odesa, local officials said. Poland briefly scrambled fighter jets as a preventive measure. Ukraine launched drone attacks on Russia, damaging ports at Vysotsk and Ust-Luga and causing a power blackout in Sevastopol, Russian authorities said.

The bombardment comes ahead of a NATO summit in Turkey this week, where U.S. President Donald Trump will meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to discuss efforts to end the war that began with Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022.
