A Russian maritime patrol aircraft repeatedly approached the UK carrier strike group while it operated in the Norwegian Sea last week. The Ministry of Defence said the aircraft flew unnecessarily close to HMS Prince of Wales, dropped sonobuoys, and did not respond on international safety frequencies.
F-35 fighter jets intercepted the aircraft and escorted it from the area. The Ministry of Defence described the approaches as repeated and close.
The carrier strike group was conducting operations in the Arctic region at the time. No further incidents were reported after the escort.
