The assault occurred hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that another large-scale Russian attack was imminent. A Russian strike on Kyiv last Thursday killed at least 31 people. The latest attack came one day before a NATO summit was scheduled to begin.
Ukraine’s Air Force stated that Russia fired hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles overnight, including 29 ballistic missiles that struck their targets. Russia’s Defense Ministry said the strikes targeted weapons factories, drone production sites, armored vehicle and missile facilities, air defense repair sites, and fuel and energy infrastructure in Kyiv and surrounding areas.
The ministry added that air defenses downed 519 Ukrainian drones overnight.
Zelenskyy stated on X that Ukrainian forces performed well against drones and cruise missiles but lacked sufficient interceptors for ballistic missiles. He urged U.S. and European partners at the NATO summit to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses.
