Ryanair Flight Returns to Greece After Window Failure Injures One Passenger

Ljubisa Karovic, 61, was traveling with his wife Svetlana Maksimović on Ryanair flight FR1879 from Thessaloniki to Germany when a piece of debris detached from the Boeing 737-800’s engine and shattered the window nearest seat 11F. The rapid decompression caused a 6,000-foot descent, and the aircraft returned for an emergency landing in Thessaloniki.
Karovic sustained severe burns and was hospitalized after fainting three times, while his wife and other passengers pulled him back inside as oxygen masks deployed.
Ryanair stated the aircraft landed normally, passengers returned to the terminal, one passenger received medical assistance on the ground, and a replacement flight was arranged to Germany. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating at the request of Greek authorities.
