A Ryanair Boeing 737 suffered an uncontained engine failure shortly after takeoff from Thessaloniki on July 10, 2026, sending debris into the fuselage and dislodging a passenger window. The 61-year-old man seated at the window was partially sucked outward until his wife held his feet, a Greek doctor who treated him on the ground told ABC News.
The aircraft declared an emergency and oxygen masks deployed in the cabin.
It performed an air turnback and landed safely at Thessaloniki airport that morning, according to a senior Greek aviation official. Passengers returned to the terminal, and one requested medical assistance on the ground. Ryanair confirmed the flight to Memmingen returned shortly after departure.
A replacement aircraft departed Thessaloniki at 9:53 local time to carry passengers onward. The 737 Next Generation involved was delivered by Boeing in 2008. Greek authorities are in contact with Ryanair's chief pilot in Malta and the airline's head of safety.
The National Transportation Safety Board was notified of the right-engine issue and cabin decompression. Under International Civil Aviation Organization rules, the Republic of North Macedonia will lead the investigation.
