Perpetrators entered the building by breaking through boarded-up windows, disabled security cameras and the internet connection, and left a lit cigarette on the ground. Police attended the scene but classified the church as a commercial premises, forgoing forensic tests. They requested CCTV footage but did not pursue further immediate action.
The church, purchased by Pastor Berkoh-Gyamfi in July 2025, experienced no vandalism prior to his offer on the property.
The first incident followed shortly after the offer, escalating to a fire that required four Essex Fire Brigade engines to extinguish. That blaze destroyed the interior, including toilets, the church hall, and a piano, with total repair costs reaching £50,000. Anti-Christian graffiti referencing the ichthys symbol appeared on walls during the fire incident.
Subsequent attacks have included five prior vandalisms, contributing to the cumulative damage. The church had been rented by the congregation since 2018 without issues. Pastor Berkoh-Gyamfi suspects the attacks are orchestrated by developers who competed to buy the land, with teenagers possibly carrying them out.
He reported observing individuals in hooded tracksuits on CCTV footage late at night, monitoring the property. He expressed concerns about safety once the church resumes operations.
