Sam Smith and Christian Cowan Announce Engagement

The couple attended the 2026 Met Gala together on Monday. They were overheard talking about their engagement at the Mark Hotel before walking the red carpet.

A hotel lobby spy described the engagement as private, adding that the pair appeared over the moon and deeply in love. Cowan accessorized his black couture Erté-inspired ensemble with a massive square yellow diamond ring on that finger. The ring is by Cartier.

Cowan designed his own ensemble as well as Smith's matching getup for the event. Smith, who identifies as non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, posted about the duo’s outfits on Instagram after the gala. Quoting Cowan, Smith captioned an Instagram carousel: “I have always loved Erté.

Have been photographed engaging in public displays of affection in New York City, accompanying each other to tattoo appointments and attending numerous runway shows.

Smith and Cowan were first linked in December 2022 when they watched former President Joe Biden sign the Respect for Marriage Act into law at the White House. The Respect for Marriage Act repealed the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act and ensures federal recognition of same-sex and interracial marriages.

Smith and Cowan made their red carpet debut as a couple at the 2024 Met Gala in coordinating attire.
