Samsung Adds AI Features to Refrigerators and Ovens Using Google Gemini
Samsung Electronics is incorporating artificial intelligence into its Bespoke appliances, including refrigerators that identify food and suggest recipes. The features, powered by Google Gemini, aim to assist with tasks like updating shopping lists. Competitors like LG are also integrating AI into home appliances.
ndtv.comThe updated refrigerator uses AI-powered cameras to identify food items and suggest recipes based on available ingredients. It can also add missing items to an Instacart shopping list.
The technology, named Vision AI, captures fridge contents automatically, eliminating manual tracking. Michael McDermott, executive vice president of consumer electronics at Samsung, stated that the refrigerator can identify specific foods like a can of Coke using a large language model.
Users can view supplies via a companion app on their phones while shopping. The software update for the Bespoke AI Family Hub was unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this year. Many features rely on Google Gemini, though Google did not respond to requests for comment.
The AI-powered refrigerator starts at $2,799, and the smart range begins at $1,349. Advanced features, including improved food recognition, are scheduled to roll out in May. The AI-powered oven includes a camera that recognizes dishes and recommends cooking times. It can record video of the cooking process.
Samsung's virtual assistant, Bixby, is integrated into appliances for voice recognition and personalized experiences, such as customized calendars and reminders. McDermott said the goal is to create technology that operates in the background to simplify daily tasks.
“The technology, called Vision AI, captures what's in your fridge so you don't have to manually track it.”
Competitors including LG are introducing AI in appliances to automate tasks by learning user habits.
