San Diego Padres starting pitcher Randy Vásquez was placed on the 15-day injured list Friday with a bruised right ankle after being struck by a comebacker from Mookie Betts in the first inning of Thursday night's 12-7 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The 27-year-old right-hander stayed in the game and allowed four runs over three innings on 50 pitches before being removed. He was later hospitalized after fainting on the way to get an X-ray.
Tests on Vásquez's ankle Friday came back negative for fracture or other serious injury. " Stammen added, "All things point positive for Randy today, but just got to be careful. " In a separate move, catcher Freddy Fermin was placed on the injured list with a head contusion.
Stammen said Fermin "did not get diagnosed with a concussion" but noted the team wanted to give him time to heal from prior head blows this season without risking another.
