Sanders Says He Supports Platner Despite Past Text Messages
Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders stated Monday that he continues to back Graham Platner, the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in Maine. The comments follow media reports about sexually explicit text messages Platner exchanged while married.
winnipegfreepress.comVermont Sen. Bernie Sanders said Monday that he continues to support Graham Platner after media reports described sexually explicit text messages the Maine Senate candidate exchanged with several women while married. Sanders, an early backer of Platner, told The Associated Press that voters should focus on economic issues facing working families in Maine rather than the reported messages.
Platner, an oyster farmer and combat veteran, is seeking the Democratic nomination to challenge Republican Sen. Susan Collins.
The Maine primary is scheduled for June 9.
Platner’s main rival for the nomination, Maine Gov. Janet Mills, suspended her campaign in April. Platner is scheduled to appear at a get-out-the-vote rally Friday evening in Bar Harbor with progressive Rep. Ro Khanna of California and other Democratic candidates.
The event is set for a historic theater in the coastal town. Platner is also expected to attend a fundraiser co-hosted by Ron Klain, former chief of staff to former President Joe Biden. The race is viewed as one of the most closely watched Senate contests as Democrats seek to regain control of the chamber.
