Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez to campaign with el Sayed in Michigan Senate primary

Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will appear with Abdul el Sayed at campaign events in Michigan on July 18 and 19 as part of a tour labeled "The People vs. The Powerful." El Sayed, 41, a former Wayne County health director, is one of two Democrats seeking the party's nomination to replace Peters. He faces Rep. Haley Stevens in the Aug. 4 primary.

Campaign appearances and polling Sanders previously appeared with el Sayed at a May 3 rally in Detroit. Ocasio-Cortez endorsed el Sayed on July 2. A Tavern Research poll conducted July 6-7 showed Stevens at 42 percent and el Sayed at 41 percent among likely Democratic primary voters, with fewer undecided voters than in earlier surveys.

Primary context Stevens has received support from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and other establishment Democrats. El Sayed has centered opposition to Israel in his campaign. The candidates debated on July 7, discussing Israel policy, financial backers, and electability. The winner will face former Rep. Mike Rogers, who is running unopposed in the Republican primary.
