Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez to Campaign with El-Sayed as Stevens Leads Michigan Senate Primary Poll

Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will make three campaign stops this weekend in Michigan alongside Abdul El-Sayed, Fox News reported. El-Sayed is running in the Democratic primary for the U.S.

Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Gary Peters. The primary is scheduled for Aug. 4. Rep. Haley Stevens is the other main candidate in the race. Sen. Chuck Schumer backs Stevens, and Sen. Gary Peters endorsed her earlier this week.

A Detroit News/WDIV poll conducted after state Sen. Mallory McMorrow suspended her campaign two weeks ago showed Stevens leading El-Sayed by seven points. The two candidates debated last week. El-Sayed previously served as Wayne County Health Department director and ran unsuccessfully for governor of Michigan in 2018.

He served as a top surrogate on Sanders' 2020 presidential campaign. United Democracy Project, an AIPAC-aligned PAC, has spent nearly $15 million supporting Stevens and opposing El-Sayed. " Stevens responded, "What my opponent needs to answer is, why is the GOP spending thousands of dollars to prop up his campaign, saying that he will make Mike Rogers the next U.S.

Former Republican Rep. Mike Rogers is the expected Republican nominee. Republicans currently hold a 53-47 majority in the U.S. Senate.
