Sara Cox to Start BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show After Gary Davies’ Interim Run

Gary Davies has concluded his tenure hosting the BBC Radio 2 breakfast show after covering the slot since March 2026. @Independent reported that Davies began the role after Scott Mills' contract was terminated following allegations about his personal conduct, ending Mills' three-decade career with the BBC. In his final broadcast, Davies said the initial period was not easy.

"I’m not one for big speeches but thank you to the whole breakfast team, you are just the best ever. It wasn’t easy at the beginning but we got there. I loved every single second being with you in the mornings here on Radio 2.
Thank you, thank you. We’ll say goodbye for now," he stated. Sara Cox is scheduled to begin her permanent role on Monday, July 6, at 6:30 a.m. @Independent reported that her appointment was revealed in April 2026.
Cox has hosted the station's teatime program from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. since 2018. Cox said she felt ecstatic, honoured and incredibly chuffed about the move. "It’s been a dream to host the Breakfast Show since I joined Radio 2 and it feels like a bit of a full circle for me.
I’ve had the most glorious seven years of my career on Teatime so thank you to my brilliant Teatime listeners who hopefully will join me at Breakfast for excellent music and all my usual nonsense plus some superstar guests," she stated. The BBC has indicated the new show will incorporate elements from Cox's previous program. Hollywood actor Tom Hanks is confirmed as her first guest.
