Saskatchewan Reports 27 Tornadoes This Season, Above Average of 15
Saskatchewan has recorded 27 tornadoes since the season began, compared with an annual average of 15. Across the Prairies, 61 tornadoes have been documented so far, well above the typical high-30s count by mid-July.

Saskatchewan has documented 27 tornadoes since the start of the current season, nearly double the province's annual average of 15, Cbc reported. About a dozen of those formed on July 10 and 11 alone. " He noted specific events including an EF3 tornado near Oxbow on June 9, an EF2 tornado in Badgerville on June 28, and two additional events along the Alberta-Saskatchewan border, one of which crossed the border as an EF2.
The broader Prairie region has recorded 61 tornadoes this year, Cbc reported. By this point in a typical season the total stands in the high 30s. Supercell thunderstorms near Saskatoon produced hail up to tennis-ball or golf-ball size, said Mostofa Kamal, a University of Saskatchewan PhD student studying such storms.
Supercells can also generate hurricane-force winds, he added. Kamal listed the ingredients that favor these storms: temperatures above 25 C, strong wind shear, atmospheric lift, and moisture. Evapotranspiration from maturing crops supplies additional moisture, he said.
Sills linked the pattern to a heat dome positioned over the northern and western United States. The same configuration is expected to persist at least until August, though a brief break is possible in the coming days.
