Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer told President Trump on Wednesday that the SAVE America Act will not pass. "Mr. President, the SAVE Act ain’t passing. It ain’t passing in the Senate, it ain’t passing the Democrats, and it ain’t passing in the courts," Schumer said, according to Washington Examiner reporting.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune stated that Republicans lack sufficient votes in the Senate to approve the measure. Republicans hold 53 seats but require 60 votes for passage, meaning Democratic support is necessary. House Republicans on Wednesday unveiled a $95 million reconciliation package that combines the SAVE America Act with the White House military supplemental request.
Schumer said Republicans are pursuing a shutdown to advance the legislation and noted that Trump had said Republicans must end the filibuster or face a shutdown in September. Schumer urged Republicans to abandon the bill. "It’s been rejected over and over again," he said.
