Scottie Scheffler Withdraws from Truist Championship to Focus on PGA Defense
World number one golfer Scottie Scheffler has chosen to skip the upcoming Truist Championship to prepare for defending his PGA Championship title. This decision leaves Rory McIlroy as a leading contender for the event's $3.6 million prize. The tournament is set for next week at Quail Hollow Club in North Carolina.
yardbarker.comScottie Scheffler, the world number one golfer, has withdrawn from the PGA Tour's Truist Championship scheduled for next week at Quail Hollow Club in North Carolina. Scheffler stated his focus is on defending his PGA Championship title the following week.
The PGA Championship is the second major of the season and occurs seven days after the Truist event concludes. Rory McIlroy, a 36-year-old golfer with six major titles, could achieve a fifth win at the Quail Hollow venue if he claims the title. McIlroy previously won at the course in 2010, 2015, 2021, and 2024, when the event was known as the Wells Fargo Championship.
The winner's prize for the Truist Championship is $3.6 million.
McIlroy won the Masters last month, marking his second consecutive victory at that major. This accomplishment places him among golfers including Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo, and Tiger Woods, who have also secured back-to-back Masters titles. The Truist Championship will be McIlroy's first competitive event since that win.
The Truist Championship will feature most of the world's top-ranked golfers, including the majority of those in the top 10 of the Official World Golf Rankings. Russell Henley, ranked eighth, is the other notable absentee besides Scheffler. McIlroy has emphasized targeting major championships and events like the Ryder Cup in the later stages of his career.
“I'm at a point in my career where I really have to target the bigger events, the four Major championships, the Ryder Cup. Trying to add to that number is something that's really important to me.”
McIlroy mentioned drawing motivation from athletes such as Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Tom Brady. He is currently tied with Arnold Palmer, Phil Mickelson, and Nick Faldo at six major titles. A win at the upcoming PGA Championship would give McIlroy seven majors.
