First Minister John Swinney has confirmed he will table a motion on Scottish independence during a scheduled statement and debate on May 26. The session, titled "ambitious for Scotland," will mark his first opportunity to outline governmental priorities after this month's election victory.

Despite this, the motion is virtually guaranteed to succeed because 72 members of the Scottish Parliament support independence, the largest such contingent in the chamber's history.

Swinney told the Press Association he intends to bring forward the motion on Tuesday following the statement, subject to agreement by parliamentary authorities. He said the vote would give Parliament the opportunity to state that the constitutional future of Scotland should be decided by a referendum delivered through a Section 30 order involving a transfer of powers.

When asked whether he expected the motion to succeed, Swinney expressed confidence based on the number of independence-supporting members. He said the proposition fulfills commitments made during the election and provides an opportunity to ensure Scotland's future is decided in Scotland.

The announcement follows pressure from Scottish Greens co-leader Gillian Mackay, who called on Swinney to hold the vote immediately after being sworn in as First Minister. Mackay stated that Scotland has voted for a pro-independence majority and that the mandate does not belong to one party alone.

Mackay emphasised that Green voters had cast ballots for independence and Scotland's right to determine its own future. She criticised successive UK governments for disregarding Scotland's democratic wishes and urged the administration to schedule the parliamentary debate at the earliest opportunity.

Campaign group Time for Scotland has called on supporters to assemble outside the parliament building at 6pm on Tuesday 26 May. A spokesman for the organisation said the demonstration would last approximately ninety minutes and is timed to coincide with evening news broadcasts expected to cover the vote live.
