Scottish Teenager Hospitalized After Needle Spiking in Magaluf Nightclub

An 18-year-old Scottish footballer needed hospital treatment after a stranger injected her with a sedative during a night out in Magaluf, Spain. The incident occurred on 21 June when the teenager was returning from the toilets inside Bananas nightclub.

She felt a sharp pain in her arm, then a liquid sensation throughout her body, and lost the ability to walk within 20 seconds. Her friends carried her to the hotel and contacted her parents. At the hospital, blood tests confirmed the presence of gamma-hydroxybutyrate, commonly known as GHB, and an antidepressant.

Doctors prescribed anti-viral medication to protect against possible HIV or hepatitis transmission from the needle. The medication has left her too fatigued to run or cycle, and she has been unable to train with Greenock Morton Women FC. She is scheduled to begin a football scholarship at Louisiana State University next month. The side effects have delayed her pre-season preparation.

Her father said the group of friends took control of the situation and contacted medical professionals. He credited them with preventing further harm. Colin Mackie, founder of Spike Aware UK, told BBC Scotland that needle spiking occurs for multiple reasons, including assault and theft, and is more common than many assume.

He and his wife are campaigning to make spiking a standalone offence in Scotland. The teenager has shared her account to warn others traveling in groups this summer. She advises staying with friends and avoiding going anywhere alone.
