New York PostAn air and sea search began Tuesday afternoon after an 18-year-old swimmer disappeared in rough waters off Rockaway Beach. One of the teen’s friends called 911 after witnesses reported seeing the man enter the ocean but fail to resurface. Officials said the fire department was alerted near Beach 73rd Street and Shore Front Parkway around 3:30 p.m.
The fire department deployed rescue swimmers, drones, and marine units but did not immediately locate the teen. The police department’s specialized scuba and aviation units later joined the search. Beachgoers described the operation as intense. One witness said she heard commotion and saw multiple helicopters, noting that the downwash created strong winds and sand movement on the beach.
Another beachgoer said the general atmosphere remained calm despite the large rescue effort. The same witness added that the focus was on the missing swimmer’s family and the stress they were experiencing. A second person at the scene received treatment for minor injuries but declined further medical attention.
Officials noted that lifeguards are not yet on duty at city beaches, with the official season scheduled to begin on Sunday.
