Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson announced that 22 closed-circuit television cameras positioned around the city’s Stadium District will be switched on for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Wilson said the decision followed a briefing from law enforcement partners received in the last week and a half. The mayor stated that the briefing identified credible threats to people, property, or the event.

The cameras, located near Pioneer Square and SODO, will transmit live footage to the Seattle Police Department’s Real Time Crime Center. That center already receives video from a larger network of public and private cameras across the city. Wilson released the policy reversal in a statement on June 5.

She had previously resisted activating the cameras, citing concerns about privacy and potential government access to the data. The mayor said the cameras will remain active only for the duration of the games and will be turned off afterward. Seattle is scheduled to host six matches between mid-June and early July 2026.

When asked about the nature of the threat, Wilson declined to provide specifics. She described the information as standard law enforcement terminology indicating intent and capability to cause harm. Officials said the cameras will be deactivated after the tournament while the city completes a broader review of the surveillance system’s future.
