KOMO News reported that the shootings are associated with ongoing prostitution and human trafficking activity along Aurora Avenue. In one recent incident, a stray bullet entered a home and stopped near the bassinet of a 6-week-old infant.
Seattle police stated that officers recovered approximately 40 shell casings after multiple people exchanged gunfire near Aurora Avenue North and North 98th Street over the weekend. Security footage captured several seconds of rapid shooting that struck nearby apartments, homes, and parked cars.
The department said it is increasing overnight patrols along Aurora Avenue and assigning extra resources from its Gun Violence Reduction Unit.
Some residents expressed concern that the barriers could delay firefighters, ambulances, or police during emergencies. Others noted that Seattle requires permits for any structures placed in public roadways, which could lead the city to remove the barricades.
Supporters of the measures said enough routes remain open for emergency vehicles and argued that the immediate risk from shootings outweighs concerns about the temporary roadblocks.
