A second full moon in a single calendar month will occur this weekend. m. EDT on Sunday, May 31. The moon will rise in the southeastern sky shortly after sunset on Saturday, May 30. At that time it will appear large and orange against the horizon before climbing higher during the night.
The moon will be visible from most locations in North America with an unobstructed view to the southeast. No special equipment or dark-sky conditions are required. Antares, the brightest star in the constellation Scorpius, will appear below the moon shortly after moonrise.
5 days does not align exactly with calendar months, producing this event roughly every two to three years. The next monthly Blue Moon is scheduled for December 31, 2028, and will coincide with a total lunar eclipse.
Jupiter will appear close together low in the western sky between June 9 and 11. A new moon on June 15 will precede the June solstice on June 21.
