The agency introduced a single insignia for all law enforcement staff on Wednesday. The 24-karat gold badge replaces separate designs previously used by different units.
Washington ExaminerThe U.S. Secret Service announced a new single badge design for its officers on Wednesday, though older badges will remain in circulation until distribution is complete. Washington Examiner reported that the badge marks the first time in the agency’s 161-year history that every officer will wear the same design.
The badge features a raised star around a circular shield. Blue highlights represent law enforcement work while gold accents recall earlier command emblems used by Secret Service police. The words “Special Agent” appear at the bottom and the founding year 1865 sits above them.
The badges are plated in 24-karat gold and produced mostly by hand at Blackinton, a company in Attleboro Falls, Massachusetts. The agency said the single design is meant to reflect its combined mission of protecting national infrastructure and political leaders. Special-agent badges in use since 2003 will be phased out gradually.
“When I first joined the Secret Service twenty-five years ago, one thing stood out to me immediately: while we all served the same mission, our law enforcement personnel were represented by different badges,” Secret Service Director Sean Curran said.
” Blackinton CEO David Long said, “It’s just an honor making a product for the people that protect the President. ” The first finished badge was presented to Curran on June 3.
Distribution to personnel has begun, though both the new and older badges will remain in circulation until every officer receives the updated design.
