Secretary of State Says Greenland Remains Part of Denmark for Now

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated during a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing on Wednesday that Greenland remains part of Denmark for now. Rubio was responding to a question about the island's status. He added that the administration is currently holding talks with Greenland and Denmark on using the territory for collective defense and described the discussions as productive.

Trump and Greenland Leaders President
Trump has argued that acquiring Greenland would strengthen U.S. national security and has warned that China or Russia could gain control if the U.S. does not act. Greenland's five main political parties issued a joint statement in January declaring they do not want to become part of the U.S. or Denmark and wish to remain Greenlanders.
Trump's special envoy to Greenland, Jeff Landry, said in May that he believed it was time for the U.S. to put its footprint back on the island.
