U.S. Policy on Taiwan Remains Unchanged, Secretary of State Says
Secretary of State Marco Rubio told a Senate committee that Washington continues to seek preservation of the current status quo with Taiwan. The statement follows last month's summit between the U.S. president and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Substrate placeholder — needs reviewSecretary of State Marco Rubio said Tuesday that U.S. policy toward Taiwan has not changed and that Washington wants the current status quo preserved. "The most important thing to understand is we want to see the status quo preserved as-is at this moment. That's our policy, that's what we've said, that's what we continue to say," Rubio said.
He described the U.S.-Taiwan relationship as delicate but stable. "It's a very ... delicate relationship to balance, but our policy on Taiwan is not changing," Rubio said.
Context After Beijing Summit Last month's summit between the U.S. president and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing prompted questions in Taipei about Washington's commitment to the island's defense. Rubio's remarks were the first public clarification on Taiwan since that meeting. No other policy shifts were announced during the session.
