Section 702 surveillance authority expires after House rejects extension

Officials have credited the authority with supporting operations that killed al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri in 2022 and disrupted a planned attack on a Taylor Swift concert in Austria in 2024.

Statements from lawmakers House Judiciary Committee ranking member Jamie Raskin said earlier this week that existing authorizations would continue unaffected at least through March 17, 2027. House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rick Crawford said the lapse places the government in uncharted territory, noting that data in the Section 702 database will become increasingly outdated over time.

Administration position President Trump urged passage of the short-term extension on Wednesday, citing national security needs during upcoming events including the World Cup and America250 celebrations. Trump also stated he is seeking a permanent nominee for director of national intelligence with national security experience and has nominated Jay Clayton for the post.
