One of the victims was identified as Amin Abdullah, a security guard at the center and father of eight. Officials said his actions kept the gunmen away from the attached school and limited the scope of the attack. Community members described Abdullah as welcoming and professional.
One recalled that he greeted everyone who approached the mosque, whether children, elderly visitors, or people in need. The other two victims were identified as Mansour Kaziha and Nader Awad, both members of the mosque community. No students or staff at the school were injured.
Police said the incident is being investigated as a possible hate crime. Officials noted that hate rhetoric was involved and that the location of the Islamic Center factored into the classification. The FBI said it has responded to the shooting and will provide resources to local partners.
Officials have not yet publicly confirmed a motive. Earlier Monday, police received a call from the mother of one suspect reporting a runaway juvenile and missing weapons. The mother said she believed her son was suicidal and that both suspects were wearing camouflage clothing.
A LaunchGood fundraiser organized by the Council on American-Islamic Relations and the Islamic Center has raised nearly $2 million in under 24 hours. The goal is $2.2 million to cover funeral costs, household needs, and support for Abdullah's family.
A separate fund set up directly by the Islamic Center has raised nearly $1 million toward its $1 million goal. The center asked the public to use only official channels for donations.
“I think it's fair to say his actions were heroic, and, undoubtedly, he saved lives today.”
The center will remain closed until further notice. Officials said additional police patrols will be deployed to places of worship in the area.
