TSA rolled out AutoCAT eGates at Charlotte Douglas, Los Angeles International, and Reagan National airports to speed ID checks for PreCheck and Touchless ID passengers during the holiday rush.
citizen.co.zaMore than 3 million travelers are projected to pass through TSA checkpoints each day on Thursday, June 18, and Sunday, June 21, 2026, according to the Transportation Security Administration. The agency introduced new self-service AutoCAT eGates at three airports to shorten the identity-verification step for passengers enrolled in TSA PreCheck or Touchless ID.
The gates allow travelers to insert an ID or passport and walk through turnstiles directly to security screening, removing the requirement to hand documents to an officer at a counter.
TSA said officers previously stationed at those counters are reassigned to other positions within the checkpoint. Charlotte Douglas International Airport has eight operational eGate lanes that are scheduled to remain in service through July 2026 as part of ongoing testing. The same technology is also in use at Los Angeles International Airport and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
TSA told ABC News the gates were installed to accelerate the verification process. The agency will evaluate different eGate systems over the coming months and is examining public-private partnership models for possible wider deployment. The eGate process mirrors systems already operating at some European airports.
A comparable expedited screening option has been available through private programs such as CLEAR, but the TSA rollout represents a broader application for PreCheck travelers.
