Sellers on Facebook Marketplace are adding AI-generated images of women to listings for vehicles and other items. The images are intended to increase views, though sellers report mixed results on actual sales.
Sellers on Facebook Marketplace are adding AI-generated images of women to listings for cars, boats, motorcycles, and heavy equipment. The images show women in revealing clothing posed next to the items for sale. Business Insider reported that one seller in Southern California added an image of a woman in a bikini top, denim shorts, and cowboy boots leaning on a Jeep.
The seller said the tactic increased views and clicks on the listing.
Seller experience The seller stated that many messages asked whether the woman came with the item or whether she was real. The seller also received negative comments about appearance and few inquiries about the vehicle itself. The listing had been active for 19 weeks at the time of the report. The seller said the idea came from an online video about reselling thrift-store items.
Pattern across listings Other Marketplace listings have shown similar AI-generated images, including a woman sitting on a motorcycle and multiple women posed on a Mercedes and a hot tub. The images often contain visual inconsistencies typical of AI generation.
The practice uses the established idea that images of attractive people can draw attention to products. Sellers appear to be applying the approach to used-item listings on the platform.
