Sen. John Cornyn Faces Backlash Over Repost From Republicans Against Trump Account

Sen. John Cornyn reposted a message from the Republicans Against Trump account on X, an action that drew criticism from some users after he responded to a post by CBS Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent Margaret Brennan. Brennan had commented on a classified Pentagon briefing regarding the impact of the Iran conflict on U.S. weapons systems.

Cornyn replied by questioning the briefing's implications and asking whether the alternative was to allow Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon. In his response to Brennan, Cornyn wrote, "The problem with this narrative is: so what is the alternative? Or is this just more Trump derangement syndrome?

Does he prefer allowing Iran to get a nuclear weapon? " Conservative activist Scott Presler replied by asking why Cornyn had reposted content from the Republicans Against Trump account. Presler reposted an earlier Cornyn retweet from that account quoting Cornyn as saying he would tell Texas voters that Ken Paxton is unfit for office.

The exchange occurred as Cornyn campaigns for reelection in a competitive Texas Senate runoff against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton scheduled for May 26. Some users on X posted screenshots of the repost and commented that it showed opposition to the current administration.

One user wrote that it was no secret Cornyn opposes both the president and the MAGA movement.

Cornyn's campaign page states that he has voted with the president 99 percent of the time and has supported key initiatives including the One Big Beautiful Bill Act and tax cuts. Scott Presler has been active in supporting Paxton in the race and seeking to unseat Cornyn, who is described as a strong ally of Senate Majority Leader John Thune.

The primary contest has included criticism of Cornyn's record on ethics issues. The Pentagon briefing discussed the effects of the Iran conflict on American weapons systems. Cornyn's response to Brennan's post about the briefing triggered the renewed focus on his earlier social media activity.
